"They made it back from the moon"

In computer class we watched a segment from the television show WIRED science. The segment was about the reverse engineering of Apollo rockets that were used to take astronauts to the moon and back. When the video was done a kid asked, "We have been to the moon?" I answered "Yes." He replied "And they made it back?" Again I answered "Yes." Another student ask right away "How did they breath in space?" We then proceeded to spend the next thirty minutes talking about space, the atmosphere, the planets, early space travel, modern space travel, when of the kids interrupted me asking, "So how does the sun move around the earth?" One of the other kids responded "We move around the sun." I was glad there was some basic science knowledge in the room. Come to think of it, I believe I thought them that when we were studying the Aztec, Inca, and Maya and their knowledge of the Lunar calendar in history class.

The Greatest Phone Call of All Time

My Principal called last night, Thursday, at 9:15. When I saw her name on the caller ID I thought this is odd, am I in trouble, am I fired, all of these thoughts raced threw my mind as a picked up the phone and placed it on my ear. My Principal informed me that our town was under a boil water notice and that school would be closed tommorrow. She said something else but I was not really paying attention, I was so happy that I think I let out a tear or two. A three day weekend. With MLK day the following week, two three day weekends in a row. As my kids say, "Yessssssss"
